Supervisors evaluate road widening costs

During its meeting Monday, the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors heard cost estimates for widening 20 feet of paved road to 22 feet in the event that the board would consider widening county roads in the future that were deemed highly traveled.

District 5 Supervisor Joe Williams requested figures from County Road Manager Victor Collins, citing that 20-foot-wide paved roads were not wide enough in areas of more traffic.

According to Collins’ figures, the county does soil and cement preparations with 22 feet to pave 20 feet at the cost of $50,000 per mile. It takes 366 tons of No. 57 stone — an aggregate processed from gravel and granite, among other materials — and 5,183.4 gallons of CRS-2 asphalt to lay down a one-mile roadway mat. Laying down a mile of seal rock requires 234 tons of seal rock and 4,706.4 gallons of CRS-2.

Collins’ figures indicate preparations with 24 feet to pave 22 feet of road over a mile would cost $54,750, as it would take an additional 34.77 tons of the stone and 492 more gallons of CRS-2 to complete a roadway mat plus an extra 22.23 tons of seal rock and 447 more gallons of CRS-2 for a mile of seal rock paving for a 22-foot-wide road. Between the purchases of soil cement, stone, seal rock and asphalt, Collins said he estimated an extra $8,268.91 to pave a mile of a road 22 feet in width.

Williams said the board could collaborate with Collins in the future to decide which roads were heavily traveled and add the expenses needed to widen those areas to the county’s four-year road plan.

“I think that’s $8,000 that would be well spent. What we’re doing now is coming back and repatching those roads because people are running off the side,” Williams said. “The (roads) that are highly traveled need that extra two feet.”

District 3 Supervisor Marvel Howard also tasked Collins with getting an estimate for leveling the intersection of Poor House Road and South Montgomery Street. Howard said the crossing was uneven and, it being heavily traveled, should be corrected. Collins’ approximation for the road improvement was $18,179.20.

The board was initially scheduled to hear from County Engineer Clyde Pritchard regarding an order to program Old Highway 25 to be considered for funding through the Surface Transportation Program. Pritchard did not attend the meeting.

In other business, the board went into executive session shortly after the meeting began to discuss a personnel matter stemming from County Tax Assessor Allen Morgan’s office. The board, minus District 2 Supervisor and Board President Orlando Trainer, who was out of town, took no action and deadlocked 2-2 on a motion to accept a payroll request related to the personnel matter.
