SMITH COLUMN: Least for day, time on field was good deal

Sometimes sportswriters and broadcasters have a background in athletics before sitting behind a computer or television camera.
There was nothing like that for me before beginning my career at the Starkville Daily News back in the 1980s.
Anyone who knew me before beginning my journalistic career in this area are a witness that there's not one athletic bone in my body. Throwing any kind of football, basketball, baseball or softball was the furtherest thing from my mind.
