Bette Scales

Bette Ward Scales of Collierville, TN, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2013 in her home. She was 85 years old.  Bette is preceded in death by her husband, Sam W. Scales.  She is survived by her three children, Hunter Scales and his wife Twila of Austin, Betsy Mullins and her husband Walt of Collierville, and John Scales and his wife Jennifer of Atlanta.  She has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Bette was born in Waynesboro, Georgia on November 18, 1927.  She graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus Georgia.  She met and married Sam W. Scales in December, 1949.  Together, they shared 56 years of marriage, raising three children and making their home in diverse places around the world.

Bette was a devoted wife and mother. She and Sam spent over 17 years living abroad, including in Thailand, Australia, Mexico, and Panama. Bette was an accomplished cook who loved to entertain.  She was the model of a southern lady, gracious and friendly.  

After retirement, they returned to Sam’s hometown of Starkville Mississippi. After her husband’s death, she moved to Tennessee to live with her daughter.

Funeral services will be held graveside at Odd Fellows Cemetary in Starkville, MS on April 19, 2013 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.  The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, friends contribute to the “Wounded Warrior Project”
