MDA: Legislation is a dealmaker

April 26, 2013

Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Brent Christensen spoke to the Senate Finance Committee moments ago regarding details on the Yokohama Tire Corporation plant that is set to land in Clay County.
Christensen confirmed that the total package that is before legislators today is worth $130 million. $70 million is requested up front as an investment in the plant that includes a land purchase worth $9.5 million for 1,121 acres at Clay County's Prairie Belt Powersite.
"This was an incredibly fast moving, schedule oriented project," Christensen said of the negotiations that have been going on since November, the month the powersite was unveiled. "So you can see how fast this will move once the decisios are made."
Christensen also confirmed in the meeting that the legislative incentives package that is before lawmakers today will make the deal for the Clay County plant.
All total, the investment from Yokohama will be $1.2 billion.
