Mississippi State University has become a finalist for a chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society, clearing the first segment of a three-year selection process.
Phi Beta Kappa is an arts and sciences honor society dating back to 1776, founded by five students at the College of William and Mary to encourage intellectual integrity, tolerance, broad-ranging interests and a love of learning. Only about 10 percent of U.S. institutions of higher learning have Phi Beta Kappa chapters, and the organization invites only about 10 percent of these schools’ arts and sciences graduates to join.
