An open letter to Gov. Phil Bryant
By Mary Lea Nations
I wanted to write to ask you to please consider the role of women in the state of Mississippi and the United States. Your statement on June 4, 2013, was an embarrassment to the state of Mississippi and flew in the face of many great working women. I am the Managing Member of an all-woman owned Association Management Company based in Clinton, Mississippi. We have three national associations and three state-wide trade associations as clients and hope to soon add an international client to the mix. Based in Mississippi but bidding on business with volunteer leaders all over the country/world, we have to fight the stereotype of what and who Mississippi is every day. We want our clients to understand that they will receive the same excellent management services as those that are headquartered in the bastions of association management - New York, Chicago, and DC. We work hard and provide an excellent product (at probably a fraction of the cost). I think we represent Mississippi well with many instances of grace and ingenuity under pressure.
