Reflections in the face of the ‘Big 0-5'

They say a child's personality takes a while to really shine through, but I've never believed that. I think it just takes a few months or so for the subtleties of a child's personality to resonate with parents.

With Zayley, there were no such subtleties. She came into the world at Bradley County Medical Center in Warren, Ark., with all the force of Attila the Hun trying to conquer the Romans. She was loud, she was mad and she wanted somebody to fix it. The nurses handed her off to me, and as I held my child for the first time, she looked at me very assertively with her big, brown eyes, as if to ask, "Aren't you supposed to be doing something productive?"
