Jacket hope to remain sharp through open date

The Starkville High School football coaching staff was encouraged by the effort the defense gave against Southaven last Friday night.
After giving up 90 points in three games, an average of 30 points per game, the Jackets held a dangerous Southaven offense to 14 points.
SHS defensive coordinator Brooks Oakley considered the play of his unit against the Chargers better than even the shutout it got in the season-opening 17-0 win over Noxubee County.
"Most of the time we had 11 guys playing with effort, which is a key and we just got done talking about it (on Monday)," Oakley said. "Playing with effort makes up for a lot of mistakes.
