Vols drop 20-8 decision to Chiefs

SENATOBIA – The Starkville Academy Volunteers managed to shut out Magnolia Heights in the second half Friday night, but the damage had been done in the first as the homestanding Chiefs won a 20-8 decision.
The Vols held a dangerous Magnolia Heights offensive to only 20 points and eight first downs on a rainy night. The Chiefs were able to score 75 points last week.
Starkville Academy was hampered by five turnovers, while Magnolia Heights only lost one fumble.
After the Vols took a 2-0 lead by getting a first-quarter safety, the Chiefs scored three second-quarter touchdowns on the ground to take a 20-8 halftime advantage.
Grant Wolfe helped Starkville Academy close the gap to 20-8 at halftime with a 27-yard touchdown run.
Neither team was able to score in the second half.
Magnolia Heights did all of its damage on the ground with 277 yards and three scores.
The Vols put up 105 yards rushing with Wolfe gaining 48 yards on eight carries and Noah Heflin picked up 30 yards on seven attempts.
Jake Griffin, Tripp Janssen and Blake Slaughter were credited for play on defense for Starkville Academy.
The Vols saw their record fall to 2-3 and return home next week when they host Winston Academy for homecoming.
