James "Cubby" Harris values his days as a Hall of Fame defensive back at East Mississippi Community College.
The junior college experience in Scooba made an impression on Harris and helped him return to his hometown of Starkville to make a difference.
He coached in the youth leagues in Starkville for 20-plus years and tried to be a positive influence on children of the community.
For his commitment to Starkville and his alma mater, EMCC will present Harris with the 2013 Alumnus of the Year Award at halftime of today's homecoming football game against Coahoma Community College.
"It's going to be special and I'm happy about it," Harris said. "I had a great time down there. I wish it had been four years. It was a nice atmosphere there and having the one-on-one with your teachers. Everyone made you get your work and your books, but it was a fun time. There wasn't much to do, but it was like family."
