Vols blanks Patriots on homecoming

September 28, 2013

It has often been said that defense wins games.
That was certainly the case for Starkville Academy on Friday night, as the Volunteers held off the visiting Winston Academy Patriots 14-0.
Penalties proved to be a big factor early for SA, as a total of five offensive penalties in the first quarter resulted in two scoreless possessions.
The Vols offense didn’t become a scoring threat, until their defense recovered a botched lateral deep in Patriot territory with just under 1:53 left in the first quarter. With 39 seconds left, the Vols found the end zone on a 3-yard touchdown run from sophomore tailback Noah Heflin to take a 6-0 lead to close out the quarter.
“We had chances to make plays early,” Starkville Academy head coach Jeff Terrill said. “But anytime you have that many penalties and some dropped passes, that’s going to stop drives.”
