One former Starkville resident is making quite the name for himself in the triathlon world.
A 1981 graduate of Starkville High School and a 1986 Mississippi State University graduate, Tom Lowery most recently competed in the ITU World Championships in London where he finished sixth in his age group (50-54) with a time of 1:10:38. Lowery’s time also made him the second-highest American finisher.
So how did a resident of Gainesville, Fla., find himself swimming, biking and cycling among the best in the world?
“It is a series of qualifications that you go through,” Lowery said. “Typically you have to race a regional championship and there are 10 regionals held around the country. The top 10 percent of those people get invited to race at the national championship each year. The one that I did for London was in Burlington, Vt. You have to finish in the top 18, and then those people get invited to go to the world championships.”
