SMITH COLUMN: Down stretch, games mean much more

October 29, 2013

The high school football season seems to have flown by.
It's hard to realize that there is only one regular season game left for some of the schools in our area and two remaining for others.
With all of the games that have been played so far, there are two on the schedule this week that have serious implications.
The Starkville Yellowjackets make the trip to Vicksburg Friday night with the Class 6A, Region 2 championship on the line.
If the Jackets win, they will improve their region mark to 6-0 and can clinch the title. An SHS loss means it will have to take care of business at home against Clinton the next week.
Words really can't express in this space the tremendous job that coach Jamie Mitchell and his staff continues to do with the Jackets.
After pretty much dominating Class 5A the two previous seasons, SHS has entered Class 6A and hasn't missed a beat. The Jackets have defeated Columbus, Northwest Rankin, Greenville Weston, Madison Central and Jackson Murrah so far in Region 2.
