SMITH COLUMN: Starkville shows sportsmanship in win

November 16, 2013

Smith

One of the best displays of sportsmanship took place during Friday night's game between the Starkville Yellowjackets and Grenada Chargers.
With 8 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Grenada defensive lineman Tony Tillman sustained an injury and had a difficult time getting off the field.
Starkville offensive lineman Antonio Hinton noticed that Tillman was struggling and saw that he was in pain. Hinton went over to Tillman, put his arm around him and assisted him to the sideline.
As the pair neared the sideline, SHS quarterback Princeton Jones joined Hinton in helping Tillman off the field.
It was a nice gesture at that moment, during an extremely competitive game, that the two Jackets thought enough about a hurting opponent to check on him.
That's just the type of character that the SHS players are developing under the leadership of head coach Jamie Mitchell and his staff.
There are not many players that would take the time during a game between plays to do what Hinton and Jones did.
The Jackets were not only good sports, but very effective in their play as well as they defeated the Chargers 14-7.
