Bully mascot injured in fourth quarter of Egg Bowl

November 30, 2013

An accident that took place on the sideline during the Mississippi State-Ole Miss football game Thursday night injured an individual wearing the Bulldog (Bully) mascot costume.
Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin confirmed on Friday morning that the person wearing the costume was Michaela Mills. She was struck by a camera cart used for ESPN's coverage of the game and suffered a compound fracture of the leg. The accident took place in the fourth quarter of the Battle for The Golden Egg. The Bulldogs defeated the Rebels 17-10 in overtime.
Several reports indicated that Mills was assisted on the sideline by the medical staff and had her leg placed in an air cast. Mills was carted off the field on a stretcher and was still in her mascot outfit as she left the stadium. She underwent surgery to treat the injury on Thursday night.
According to an Oktibbeha County Hospital Regional Medical Center spokesman, Mills was in "good condition" and is expected to be released today.
The family of Mills has declined to comment on the situation at this time.
Stricklin tweeted well wishes to Mills on Friday morning and had planned to call her later.
"Our cheerleaders and spirit groups and mascots do a great job of supporting our athletic teams," Stricklin said. "We certainly don't want to see something like this happen, but we certainly hope she has a quick recovery."
