BILOXI – Georgia Military College entered Sunday’s Mississippi Bowl with the nation’s top ranking and the nation’s top running back in the form of freshman sensation Jovon Robinson.
However, former West Point High School standout Lakenderic Thomas stole the spotlight and No. 2 East Mississippi Community College stole the national title.
Behind a career-best 250 rushing yards and three touchdowns, Thomas helped carry the Lions to their second national championship in three seasons with a 52-32 win over the Bulldogs at the sixth Mississippi Bowl played before a capacity crowd at Indian Stadium.
“This championship is so sweet,” former Starkville High player Preston Baker said after the game. “Winning a state championship (in high school) was fun. Winning a state championship and a national championship in the same season was incredible, too.”
