Starkville fireman wins race, qualifies for Boston Marathon

December 15, 2013

Wade Jones competes in the Frost-bite Half Marathon in Starkville last January, while his daughter Waydlee Belle, bottom, waits to give him a high-five. Waydlee Belle gives her father support throughout every race. "It always gives me chills when I see her waiting to give me a high-five along the route," Wade Jones said. "I'd like to thank God for the ability he has giving me to accomplish the things I have done." (Submitted photo)

Ask almost anyone and they know of the Boston Marathon.
It has arguably grown into one of the largest races in the world and when it takes place in 2014, there will be a Starkville resident among its ranks.
“Even if you aren’t a runner everybody knows what the Boston Marathon is,” Wade Jones said. “I would go out on a limb and say it is probably the most well-known race in the world. People come from all over the world. I don’t know of any races in any other countries, but I guarantee if you go to another country, people know about the Boston Marathon. It definitely means a lot to be able to qualify for it.”
After he was unsuccessful in qualifying for this year’s Boston Marathon, Jones qualified for the 2014 event by winning the recent Baton Rouge Beach Marathon with a time of 2:55.48. While Jones entered the race with the goal of finishing under 3 hours and 5e minutes, which was the time needed to qualify for the Boston Marathon, he never dreamed he would be the first to cross the finish line.
