The Starkville Yellowjackets had an opening at quarterback going into the 2013 spring practice.
After starting signal caller Gabe Myles graduated and moved on to Mississippi State, then backup Caleb Wilson moved when his father got a coaching job at Georgia, it left the Jackets will a void at that position.
Starkville head coach Jamie Mitchell and offensive coordinator Preston Leathers had a series of meetings about the situation.
The two men went back and forth on what they wanted to do. The decision was made to give Princeton Jones a try to lead the team.
"Princeton was really the only guy that we felt like even had a chance because he played 9th grade quarterback and that's what we based it on," Mitchell said. "Here was a guy who had spent two years for us at receiver. It was kind of who we were stuck with."
