Mississippi State has leaned on Craig Sword and Gavin Ware many times this season.
On Wednesday, that wasnâ€™t the case.
Sword and Ware combined for just 10 points, but the Bulldogs held on to beat Auburn 82-74 inside Humphrey Coliseum.
â€ś(This was) really a good win for our program and our team,â€ť MSU head coach Rick Ray said. â€śI was happy with the way our guys handled some adversity.â€ť
The Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 28-0 off the bench. Junior forward and Montgomery, Ala., native Roquez Johnson accounted for 18 of those 28 bench points to lead the Bulldogs.
â€śI came in and I had to step up,â€ť Johnson said.
Senior Tyson Cunningham and redshirt freshman guard Jacoby Davis each had five points as nonstarters.
Sword, who came into the game averaging 15 points, scored just six. His first basket didnâ€™t come until the end of the first half when he took a steal down the court and slammed it as time expired.
