The Mississippi State Bulldogs were very good on defense against the third-ranked Florida Gators on Thursday night, but they failed to produce on offense.
During the 62-51 loss to Florida, the points scored by MSU was a season-low.
An inability to get to the free-throw line was partly to blame for the lack points for the Bulldogs. They were only 1-of-6 from the charity stripe.
It was all in the plan for the Gators.
"The key was to not foul them and put them on the free-throw line," Florida coach Billy Donovan said.
The 62 points given up were the fewest that the Bulldogs have allowed in Southeastern Conference play.
Both Donovan and MSU coach Rick Ray said their teams left points on the court around the basket.
"We just didn't get it done," Ray said.
Bulldogs see loss
skid grow to Gators
Mississippi State has now lost four-straight games to Florida.
It is the first time the Gators have enjoyed a winning streak of that length in the series since they defeated the Bulldogs 12-consecutive times from 1984-89.
It seems MSU has taken steps to compete better against Florida. The Gators won decisions of 83-58 in Gainesville and 82-47 in Starkville last season.
"We've matured," Ray said. "We've had a maturation process. We know who we are now. Last year we were trying to figure out how to play offensively and defensively."
MSU falls again
to ranked squad
Florida is the second ranked opponent for MSU to lose to this season.
The Bulldogs opened the Southeastern Conference schedule by losing at Kentucky 85-63.
Under Ray, MSU now has an 0-6 record against ranked teams.
The last ranked team the Bulldogs defeated was No. 15 Arizona State back on Nov. 18, 2011.
No second half rally
for an MSU victory
The Bulldogs saw their record fall to 2-6 when trailing at the half.
Florida held a slim 27-26 over MSU lead at halftime.
losses for Bulldogs
This is the first time this season that Mississippi State has lost back-to-back games.
Prior to Thursday's loss to the Gators, the Bulldogs had always responded with a win following a loss this season.
boards for MSU
Mississippi State senior forward Colin Borchert tied a season-high with seven rebounds against Florida.
Borchert also pulled down seven boards on Dec. 13, 2013 against Southeastern Louisiana.
His career-high in rebounds came against Auburn last season on March 9, 2013.
start for teams
Two players from Starkville and Gainesville, Fla., started for their respective teams.
Gavin Ware, who started for the Bulldogs, is a native of Starkville and played at Starkville High School. Florida's Scottie Wilbekin started at guard and is from Gainesville.
