SMITH COLUMN: Players place pen to paper across nation

February 4, 2014

The power of the pen will be put on display in many locations across the country today.
National Signing Day opens the window to a whole new world for many high school and junior college football players.
Many days, weeks and even years of hard work go into what takes just a few short minutes to do.
Being able to put a name in ink on a piece of paper makes any commitment that was made prior to today official. Anything that may have been said up until this morning has been nothing but speculation.
There will be several young men who will honor the word they have given and attend the schools in which they had made a verbal pledge. There will also be a few surprises and some will change their minds.
It's not expected to be an extremely busy day around the Starkville area today.
Starkville Academy's Tripp Janssen will be signing with a four-year school at Delta State, while Starkville High School has three players going to the next level as Fontavious Smith and Darius Grayer will ink with Holmes Community College and Princeton Jones will join national junior college champion East Mississippi Community College.
