SMITH COLUMN: McKell places the Lady Vols on shoulders

February 16, 2014

Smith

Anna McKell had to sit on the bench with a shoulder injury while the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers were making their run in the postseason last year.
Although she wished there had been a way to contribute for the Lady Vols in 2013, McKell was patient and made sure she was healthy before resuming her basketball career.
It has been worth the wait for McKell as she has been a big part of the success for Starkville Academy this season.
On Saturday, McKell scored 21 points to lead the Lady Vols as they defeated the Hillcrest Christian Lady Cougars 48-40 to claim the Class AAA-Division II championship.
It was a satisfying moment for McKell to be able to help Starkville Academy.
"It wasn't like depressing that I had to sit out, but I did wish I was out on the court," McKell said. "This year was my first year playing in one of these kind of tournaments and it is really exciting. It was fun to be able to play and help my team win. I enjoyed it."
