The bounce went the way of Martha Alwal and the Mississippi State Bulldogs Sunday afternoon.
Alwal took a shot that hit the rim and finally fell down through the net with 3.3 seconds remaining in the game and the Bulldogs upset the 16th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores 64-62 at Humphrey Coliseum.
"I was just hoping, looking at (the final shot) and said 'please go in,' so I was pretty happy," Alwal said of the winning play.
After only having five points at halftime, Alwal shook off the symptoms of a cold and ended up leading MSU in scoring with a game-high 23 points. It tied for her largest output in a Southeastern Conference game.
Alwal scored 14 of the 21 points down the stretch for State and she didn't realize she was having that type of impact on the game in the second half.
"I was just focused on the game," Alwal said. "The guards did a good job of getting it there."
With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 17-9 overall and 4-8 in the Southeastern Conference. The Commodores fell to 17-8 overall and 6-6 in the league.
