Choctaw County looks to play well at tourney

February 17, 2014

The Choctaw County Chargers have gotten a taste of what Class 3A, Region 5 basketball is like this season.
Now, it's time to see what they can do in the postseason.
Choctaw County, which has won two games each in boys and girls, attempt to advance at the division tournament in Forest.
The Lady Chargers (3-9) are young with the only senior Tiara Conner going down with an injury.
"I'm starting an 8th grader and two 9th graders now and a sophomore," Choctaw County coach Gary Beals said. "I'm excited about it. We've been able to compete like they did against Southeast Lauderdale Friday night and they were the defending 3A champions. We've gotten better as the season has gone along which is what you ask for."
The Lady Chargers finished in a three-way tie for fourth place, but ended up in sixth because of the point system.
On the boys side, Choctaw County (5-9) finished fifth in the division.
Despite two losses to Philadelphia during the regular season, Beals is anxious to see what the Chargers will do.
"We are in ballgames, but just can't finish," Beals said. "The last 4 minutes have been critical for us this year because we just can't close out ballgames."
