Vols drop opener to Patriots

February 19, 2014

There's always a little bit of anticipation to get a new season underway.
Starkville Academy did just that in baseball on Tuesday and the Volunteers let that opening day "hype" get the better of them as they dropped a 10-4 contest to visiting Winston Academy.
“There was a lot of hype around the game,” Starkville Academy coach Jody Britt said. “The kids started getting hyped (Monday). We could tell when we took pregame that they were a little jittery.”
One of the biggest reasons for the first game jitters was the Vols youth. Outside of Harper Arnold, who got the start on the mound, Starkville Academy fielded eight new starters.
“We have a bunch of guys that are fighting for position,” Britt said. “We went with what we thought (Tuesday night) and we had a whole bunch of guys step up. We played 14, 15, 16 guys that really helped and is going to help us in the future.”
