Police warn of fundraiser phone scam

February 25, 2014

A Starkville resident was recently the target of an attempted charity fundraising scam.
O.F. Parker said that his wife received a call from a number she did not recognize over the weekend.

The caller requested Parker donate to a fundraiser being held by the Starkville Police Department, and when she expressed concern about the legitimacy of the call, the caller handed the phone off to another operator who continued to evade her questions.
“A young lady called, she asked questions and my wife attempted to answer them,” O.F. Parker said. “My wife thought (the police) were paid a salary out of our tax fund and she was confused. The lady then turned (the phone) over to a man, he scrambled a little bit and asked her about donations and she just hung up on them.”
