The Starkville High School bowling program team enjoyed the best finish in program history last Friday.
With the third-place finish in the state on the boys side and fifth-place standing for the girls, the Yellowjackets took another positive step in the development of the sport.
SHS bowling coach Jim Philamlee was pleased with the way the season finished up at the state tournament in Flowood at Fannin Lanes last Friday, but there was also a sense of what might have been.
The Jackets got a score of 827 in four games from Tyler Dawkins for an average of 206 3/4 to lead the way.
"That is very good," Philamlee said. "That's the first time we've ever had a player to bowl that good in a four-game match. We could have very easily come in second (as a team) and came close, but just couldn't get anybody else on target except him.
"I was real pleased with Skyler (Runnels) and Jessica (Rowe). (The girls) could have easily finished third too if a couple of them could have gotten on fire in one game. It's hard to get everyone doing it at the same time. I was pleased with the way the girls have come on at the end. We knew what the players needed and Cindy (Prewitt) worked on it quite a bit with them."
