Civil War film shown at MSU

For Ryan Semmes, one newspaper issue was a window into an imbalance in Civil War scholarship.

Semmes is a graduate student in Mississippi State University’s history department, and he said the campus’ Mitchell Memorial Library has a July 8, 1863 edition of the New York Times. He said it’s the first issue of the New York Times that reports on the battle of Vicksburg — but not the first to report on the concurrent battle of Gettysburg.
