Vic Schaefer and Jose Fernandez know each other well.
The two women's basketball coaches of Mississippi State and South Florida, respectively, have developed such a relationship that the two men talked about taking a fishing trip during a basketball event in New Orleans last summer.
"He likes to fish, so we have a topic outside of basketball when we are visiting," Schaefer said.
Schaefer and Fernandez will be looking to land something big today, but they are not thinking in terms of a fish.
Their teams will meet each other in the Women's National Invitational Tournament in Starkville with the winner advancing to the semifinals of the event. The tip at Humphrey Coliseum is set for 5 p.m.
Schaefer respects the job Fernandez has done with the Bulls.
"He took over that program 14 years ago and turned it around quick," Schaefer said. "They were originally in the Sunbelt and that's been many, many years ago and now they've been in the Big East for a long time. He's a tremendous recruiter and he has some great players."
