The Starkville Yellowjackets were glad to see a bright sunny day and calmer winds at the Mississippi State golf course on Tuesday.
Even though the scores were not as low as SHS boys coach Sam Bryant would like, it was good enough to beat four other teams.
The Jackets scored a 338 to finish first in front of Cleveland's 344 and Grenada was third at 356. New Hope and Columbus also participated in the event.
"They played steady," Bryant said of SHS. "If we can shave a few strokes off. (The) team total is looking pretty close to what we should be shooting. We'd like to get a few lower to make us feel better, but it's going to take this or a little bit better. This would be the lowest we could go and still make it to State out of our division. We've got a real tough division this time."
The Jackets will host the Class 6A, Region 3 Tournament at the MSU course in two weeks.
In girls action, Starkville shot a 222 as a team. Cleveland finished first with a 170.
