Mary Elizabeth Swain Bacon

Mary Elizabeth Swain Bacon, 95 died of heart failure at Robinson Memorial Hospital Hospice Care in Revenna, Ohio on March 30.  She was born on May 14, 1918, the daughter of the late Jim Henry and Verna Welborn Swain of New Albany.  She graduated as valedictorian and class president from Amory High School in 1936 and as a cum laude graduate from MSCW in 1940 with a History/English major.  She received an M.A. in Political Science from Indiana University in 1943.  After serving as a first lieutenant in the Woman?s Army Corps, she returned to IU for further graduate study.  In 1948 she married William E. Bacon of  Danville, NY, an industrial chemist who was a long time affiliate of the Liquid Crystal Institute on the Kent State University campus.  Mary Elizabeth taught political science at Indiana University, Kent State University, and was an interim instructor at Mississippi State University for one semester.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, her youngest son, George Robert, and her little sister, Zelma Anne.  She is survived by sons, William Roger of Kent and James Edward of Ketchikan, Alaska; daughters Rebecca Ellen Bacon (Dieter Magin) of Lakewood, CO and Margaret Katherine Bacon (Russell Harbaugh) of Vinton, VA; two grandsons and one granddaughter and her sisters, Margo and Martha Swain of Starkville, to whom she was always "Mimi."
