The Alabama Crimson Tide were able to get a season-opening victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs Friday night, but it wasn't easy for the nation's second-ranked team.
Alabama built a 5-0 lead through five innings and was able to thwart a late scoring surge by the home team to defeat the Bulldogs 5-1 at the MSU Softball Stadium.
State scored a run in the sixth inning and had the tying run at the plate. The Bulldogs got the leadoff runner on in the seventh, but was left stranded.
"One of the traits we want is that we never go away and we keep fighting," MSU coach Vann Stuedeman said. "We had the tying run up there in the sixth and then the leadoff of the last inning got on, started the ignition and put us in a spot to get on fire. One timely hit there and it's a totally different ballgame."
