It was a must-win situation for the Starkville Yellowjackets on Wednesday afternoon.
After what can only be described as a pitching duel, the Yellowjackets found themselves victim to an extra inning 2-0 loss to Columbus.
“We competed our tails off,” Starkville coach Travis Garner said. “(Colbey) Rivers was dynamite. That is a great club. We threw zero for zero. One of those things where it is disappointing, but hopefully they will learn from it and get better.
“Coming in here, we returned four starters. There are games where we start seven sophomores. This year was a struggle. We kept our heads above water in one of the toughest divisions and we will be stronger for it.”
