Starkville elementary teachers participate in Math Cadre

When the state of Mississippi implements the Common Core State Standards Initiative, there will be more to learning fractions than numerators and denominators.

Common Core is a set of high-level standards in English and math adopted by several states, with Mississippi schools beginning to phase in the standards during the 2012-13 academic year. Jessica Ivy, a visiting assistant professor in math education at Mississippi State University, said fractions illustrate two key types of adjustments teachers will have to make for Common Core.
