SMITH COLUMN: State in position for another strong finish

May 6, 2014

Smith

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are in another good position this baseball season.
As poorly as the Bulldogs have played at times this year, they have still managed a pretty good record at 31-18, stand 14-10 in the Southeastern Conference and second place in the Western Division and remain ranked in the top 20 of the Collegiate Baseball poll at No. 18.
It was definitely a week of highs and lows for MSU last week.
After the Bulldogs lost a 2-1 decision to Jacksonville State one week ago today, it prompted coach John Cohen to say "it's not fun to watch baseball like this."
MSU went to Auburn and pulled off its second-straight road sweep in the conference with a pair of 3-0 victories and a 12-1 Sunday win.
The number of league wins are only two off what State has done the last two seasons (16-14). With six games remaining, it stands a really good chance of matching or bettering that mark.
