MABEN – Rain delayed the beginning of the Class 2A playoff series between Mantachie and East Webster, but when it started on Saturday neither team seemed to want to give up any ground.
After battling through seven innings, it was the Wolverines who emerged victorious 7-6.
“We didn’t play our best for sure,” East Webster coach Wes Johnson said. “I commend the guys. Even though we didn’t have our best day, they just kept battling. That is what the season has been about.”
Drew Langley started the game with a single to left field for the Mustangs before scoring the first run giving them a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.
East Webster began its first trip to the batter’s box with Miller Hancock reaching via base on balls. Derek Jones advanced his teammate forward with a single to left field. A wild pitch from the Mustangs moved Hancock and Jones one base more before John Wofford Williams loaded up the bases after being walked.
