LETTER TO THE EDITOR: On SMART Buses

May 15, 2014

By Beverly Hammett, Starkville

Dear editor,

I would like to express my feelings about the S-M-A-R-T system. I am blind and walk most places with my service dog. I am physically unable to travel for long distances. I utilize the smart bus to help travel long distances and to do personal business. With this transit system, it helps me to be independent and empowers me to live life to its fullest.

The system is in its infancy, constantly growing and changing to adapt to the needs of its patrons and community. There are individuals who have to be at school, work and various appointments for business or medical. Our bus system tries to accommodate these needs by running buses in town and on-campus with clockwise and counter clockwise routes. Times are set at 30 – 40 minute intervals and are dependent upon variables such as traffic, etc.
