It was a nice thought.
If the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Ole Miss Rebels could have met in a NCAA super regional for the right to go to the College World Series, the level of interest in those games would have been off the charts.
College baseball in this state would have reached a peak never before witnessed and it would have been one of the major sporting events ever to take place in Mississippi.
With the season series tied at 2-2, the Bulldogs and Rebels could have settled things in a super regional. The bigger prize was a trip to Omaha, Neb.
There were some people who didn't want to see that matchup happen because of the implications and the loser would have an awful taste in its mouth the entire offseason.
After the events of Monday night, all of the talk of a MSU-Ole Miss super regional is just that now - just talk.
The Bulldogs fought hard, but lost the Lafayette (La.) Regional championship to the host Rajin' Cajuns 5-3. Louisiana-Lafayette is a very good hitting team and will be a tough opponent for the Rebels. The Cajuns host the super regional this weekend.
