Starkville Academy basketball teams take advantage of summer

June 9, 2014

Boys and girls of summer are not all found on the baseball or softball fields.
On the basketball court, this is one of the most valuable times of the year for coach Glenn Schmidt and Starkville Academy.
“These summer leagues give you an opportunity to play,” Schmidt said. “You can get 10-20 games ahead. The gap between junior high and high school is big. Playing in the summer lets you get a jump start on what varsity ball is like.”
The athletes are not the only ones benefiting from action during the summer months. With players graduating in spring and new players stepping up, being able to see everyone on the floor at one time in a game is like nothing else.
“These games help us evaluate the positions,” Schmidt said. “You can see who wants to play while picking your lineup for next year.”
