SMITH COLUMN: Track athletes eye Eugene as a destination

June 10, 2014

Smith

It's all about a destination.
All college sports fans have to do is bring up places like Omaha, Neb., Eugene, Ore., or wherever the NCAA Final Four happens to be held in a particular year and thoughts immediate turn to baseball, track or basketball.
As far as track and field, those athletes work and train all season for the opportunity to represent their school in Eugene.
Mississippi State has two individuals that will perform on that stage with Brandon McBride in the 800-meter run and Cornelia Griesche in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The Bulldogs have participated in some pretty high-profiled meets during the spring, but the NCAA championships are at an even higher level.
"We go to Texas Relays and Penn Relays where you you have a lot of fans, but Eugene, Oregon, is just a little different platform and arena," MSU track coach Steve Dudley said. "That's where all of the track athletes like to compete. That's why it's called Track Town USA."
