Whether this story is true, I don’t know. But I heard a speaker at a conference tell it once, and while I thought it was a bit extreme, I kind of liked the message.
The story goes that a military recruiter in a metro area up north — a place with a fair amount of ethnic and socio-economic diversity — worked one of the more economically depressed areas of the city trying to enlist young men and women to the armed services. He didn’t take the stereotypical approach to recruiting, however, because in his mind, he wanted to guarantee he recruited the right soldiers, not the most soldiers.
