From the moment in September when C Spire announced its Fiber to the Home initiative to bring 1-gigabit per second Internet service to Mississippi homes, Starkville leaders aimed to push the city to the head of the line and keep it there.

On Tuesday morning, a banner hoisted at Fire Station One Park downtown listed Starkville among four cities in Mississippi whose residents will be the first to experience C Spire’s ultra high speed Internet service — which is purportedly 100 times faster than most services now offered to residential customers in the state. The banner helped garnish a C Spire ceremony honoring the groundbreaking for fiber infrastructure on South Montgomery, the first of Starkville’s 10 “Fiberhoods” to achieve enough household preregistration to receive the service. Ridgeland, Horn Lake and Quitman also have Fiberhoods qualified to receive the gigabit Internet service.
