Mississippi State sophomore defensive lineman Chris Jones is expected to have a big season.
The Houston native has already received a good bit of praise from national college football writers. He was picked as the second-best defensive lineman in the Southeastern Conference by the SEC writers at ESPN.com. NFL.com's Chase Goodbread had Jones as the No. 3 player in the SEC to have a breakout season.
Jones received another honor by another national writer on Monday. Athlon Sports' Steven Lassan predicted who would be All-Americans when the season ended. Jones was on his first team as a defensive tackle.
Lassan wrote, "these are based on how players will perform in 2014. Career statistics and awards matter in the evaluation, but choosing players for the 2014 All-America and all-conference teams are largely based on predicting and projecting the best for the upcoming year."
Lassan also predicted Jones to be an All-SEC first team selection when the season ends.
Jones was considered one of the best recruits in the 2013 class out of Houston High School. He didn't disappoint in his first season with the Bulldogs. Jones played in all 13 games as a freshman and recorded 32 total tackles. He had seven tackles for loss and three sacks. He also had a team-high 10 quarterback hurries.
"He's got freaky talent," MSU head coach Dan Mullen said after spring drills. "But there are a lot of people out there who have had freaky talent and did nothing with it."
Lassan had wide receiver Jameon Lewis and linebacker Benardrick McKinney on the All-SEC third team with quarterback Dak Prescott and tight end Malcolm Johnson on the fourth team.
