Magnolia Youth from Water Valley was able to take a lead in the first inning and keep it in a 7-4 win over Mathiston in the final game to finish of eight on the first day of the Dizzy Dean 12-year-old North State Tournament.
After scoring 21 runs in an earlier 21-8 victory over Horn Lake, Magnolia Youth proved it had a little bit left in the tank to get its second triumph of the day.
Magnolia Youth scored three runs in the first inning to gain a lead.
Even though Mathiston cut into the margin with a pair of runs in its half of the first, Magnolia Youth answered with one run in the second inning and another in the fourth to regain its three-run advantage at 5-2.
Mathiston cut the lead back to one at 5-4 with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Magnolia Youth got the two runs back in the seventh with one being a solo home run by Dre McCrae. It was McCrae's second home run of the tournament.
Cameron Pilgrim had a double for Mathiston in the game, while Coleson Buchanan had a pair of singles. Buchanan, Pilgrim, Conner Shurden and Kaleb Parish scored one run each for the Webster County squad.
With the loss, Mathiston was sent to the loser's bracket and faces Marshall City today in a 12:15 p.m. start.
