Jay Hughes was not going to let an injury keep him down.
After tearing his Achilles in Mississippi State's first football game of the season in 2013 against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Hughes knew it was going to be a long process to get back onto the field.
The injury happened on the sixth defensive play for the Bulldogs, while Hughes was breaking up a pass.
There was quite a bit of anticipation for Hughes going into the 2013 season because he had started the last three regular season games of 2012, then came the injury against the Cowboys.
Through the ordeal of coming back, Hughes had to learn 'patience.'
"It was almost like I took a step back to take two steps forward," Hughes said. "When I went down, it hurt like anything would. Life is filled with ups and downs and I looked at it as a down."
Hughes knew he couldn't afford to feel sorry for himself because his teammates still needed him even though he could not physically be with them out on the field.
"When I got hurt, I knew that I had to be there for my teammates," Hughes said. "Being on this team is like I represent something that's bigger than myself. I put myself to the side. I was still going to meetings, traveled with the team on several occasions, rehabbed every day, worked hard, thought about coming back and stayed hungry."
