SMITH COLUMN: Bulldogs have several players to keep eye on
It looks like there will be a reason to watch several Mississippi State Bulldogs this football season.
Through Thursday, there were a total of seven Bulldogs on 12 different preseason watch lists.
The MSU player that seems to be getting the most attention as the 2014 campaign gets closer is junior linebacker Benardrick McKinney. He has made four different watch lists with the Bednarick, Nagurski, Butkus and Lombardi.
McKinney has been described as a strong, athletic and explosive linebacker. The All-America candidate, who looked into turning pro after his sophomore season, will be the leader of the Bulldog defense this season.
In starting all 13 games for MSU last year, McKinney led the team in tackles with 71. That number was fourth among sophomores in the SEC.
The Tunica native has put together two very good seasons after redshirting his true freshman year of 2011. McKinney gained first-team Freshman All-American honors by CBSSports.com in his first season to play for the Bulldogs in 2012.
On the offensive side of the football, junior quarterback Dak Prescott has been noticed quite a bit.
Not only is Prescott on the watch lists for the Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien, but he was also voted the second team quarterback on the All-Southeastern Conference Team last week at media days.
