BOA restores clerk’s authority

July 23, 2014

A called Starkville Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday brought full circle a weeks-long struggle between some board members and City Clerk Lesa Hardin.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the board approved allowing the city clerk to execute payroll and claims disbursements without prior board approval, so long as the checks bore the mayor’s or the majority of the aldermen’s signatures, as well as the city clerk’s. The measure rescinded a board July 15 board vote in executive session, which required aldermen to approve all funds, regardless of the source, before the city clerk could disburse them.
