The Starkville 10-year-old All-Stars achieved quite an accomplishment earlier this month when they won the Dizzy Dean South State championship in Eupora.
Starkville goes for an even bigger prize beginning Saturday when it participates in the World Series that continues through July 31 in Southaven.
As far as winning the state title, it has begun to sink in a little bit for Starkville coach T.J. Kent.
“It was an accomplishment for us to win state,” Kent said. “We have been coming in second and third the last couple of years and finally we made it to the finals and won. It is a big step up for us.”
Taking the title was a major deal for the 10-year-old All-Stars, but after watching his team compete week in and week out, the victory came as no surprise to Kent.
“To be 10-years-old these boys have their fundamentals down,” Kent said. “They listen to everything you tell them and take it all in. They have brought it up 10 times from where it was. It is just amazing to watch them play the game of baseball and have fun with it.”
