Omis Avant was such a loyal supporter of Starkville High School athletics that there was no way he was going to forget the Yellowjackets.
The SHS athletic department has taken a step to make sure the Jackets do not forget him.
In a short ceremony prior to Meet the Jackets activities on Monday, SHS Athletic Director Stan Miller, football coach Jamie Mitchell and boys basketball coach Greg Carter gave statements about their memories of Avant, who passed away in December 2013.
Also, a granite stone with Omis Avant's name has been placed at the front entrance of Yellowjacket Stadium.
Carter was amazed at the commitment of Avant to come watch basketball games. Avant sat in a second row of bleachers right behind the Jacket bench.
"He was there," Carter said. "Even when he lost his sight, he still came. He had a tremendous passion for it and nothing could keep him away.
"He was one of the most loyal fans because he didn't let anything get in the way of supporting SHS athletics through the games and booster club meetings. It didn't matter what it was. He was going to be there."
