November 9, 2010

From Staff Reports

Starkville High School's boys and girls cross country teams each competed last Saturday at the Choctaw Trails State Meet, with both squads improving upon last year's performance.
The Yellowjackets took 14 runners to the event in Clinton, with the first five finishers from each group earning points for their respective teams.
After finishing 12th in 2009, the varsity boys earned a sixth place finish this year. All-State runner Kamau Bostic placed 13th individually with a time of 17:11. Freshman Joseph MacGown continued his strong first season at SHS with a 15th place finish and a time of 17:15.
Also for the boys, Jonnel Ward came in 46th with a time of 18:24, Grant Woomer placed 49th with a time of 18:35, and Nathan Ball, returning from injury, finished 53rd with a time of 18:43.
The varsity girls jumped two spots from their 2009 finish, ending up in eighth place this year.
Eighth grader Walker Mattox set a personal best with a time of 17:08, good for 25th place individually.
Abigail Arinder, also an eighth grader, placed 32nd  with a time of 17:19.  Anna Jackson was 44th with her time of 17:42, while Meghan Wolf and Ashley Albritton place 72nd and 73rd, both with times of 18:52.
Senior Meg Giesemann and Freshman Sabrina Moore completed the team that ran on Saturday.
"We are sad to see the season over but are looking forward to SHS Spring Track," said Starkville head coach Caroline Woomer.
With the school season now completed, several of Woomer's runners will compete with the Starkville Striders, a local club team, who will travel to a meet in Alabama on Nov. 20th.
